“I’m a VCR funeral, a dead memory waste”

A while ago an anon had inquired about this specific lyric from the song, “Slutgarden” which is off Manson’s “The Golden Age of Grotesque” album.

The song as a whole compares sex to religion, with the words, “I memorize the words to the porno movies, this is a new religion to me.”

The song itself is Manson speaking as how people can become obsessed with religion in the same aspect they become obsessed with sex. How people will use others for sexual benefits, as a way of escaping, just as people do with religion.

That our society is more focused on finding partners based on sexual attraction alone and not for who they are as a person. Searching for sex, not love.

The specific lyrics, “I’m a VCR funeral, a dead memory waste”, I believe, are Manson’s way of saying that people often exchange the old for the new. Video cassettes are outdated, and it was around the time this album was released that DVDs had been gaining mass popularity. “VCR funeral” is a clever way of saying that Manson is killing the old in exchange for the new. That people become entranced with new and shiny things, or in this sense, new and sensual sexual partners.

“Dead memory waste”, I believe, refers that he’s not worth enough to be a memory, or even that a previous partner hadn’t been. That it’s a waste of memory and that space can be used for others more worthy.

The following lyrics, “My smile’s a chainlink fence, that I have put up.” is that people will use their appearances to their advantage to get what they want. That you can’t trust a smile or even the person you’re fucking. That it’s still a way of keeping somebody away from you. Not making love but just making it about sex. Not letting an individual get close enough to you.
